Advice About Setting Up A Business Website

What is your attitude to spending when it comes to getting a new business website online? Are you prepared to hand over top dollar for the site because you think the more you spend the better the result? Or do would you rather keep your cash in your business and feel that a social website page on the likes of Facebook is good enough for your business?

The answer to this question will not always be the same, but personality types will influence how people approach the task of setting up a business website.

If you are self-employed and running a small company or working alone, you're probably used to bootstrapping. Cash flow is something you may not have a lot of so naturally you're going to look for a low cost web design solution to marketing and advertising problems. As a result you're probably a very resourceful person and have a good grasp of many skills needed to run your business.

Are You Wasting Your Time Learning HTML?

The down side to this is that you'll often spend a lot of time trying to master new skills, and that's time that would be more profitably spent on doing business. The best advice for you is to get a clear idea of the type of website you want and then get website prices from a number of web designers. With advancements in web technology you may be surprised at just how powerful a website you can get on a tight budget.

Spending Too Much On Your Website?

The other side of the coin are the clients who think if you want a great website you have to spend a lot of money on it. This is sometimes true of course, but for most small to medium sized businesses it just is not the case.

My advice after 10 years working in the web industry is to ignore the impulse to spend a lot of money on your website, and get several quotes from web designers that work for themselves. Tell them what you need, and ask them to make other suggestions that might be of benefit. Again, you may be surprised with the response you get, and you will certainly get a better price than the big web studios will quote (for the simple reason they have lots of big overheads).

There Has Never Been A better Time To Get A Business Website

The market currently favors people who are shopping around for a new business website. Prices have been driven down because of massive competition in the web design industry, and value for money has gone up with the improvement in web technology. So whether your instinct is to spend or save, the best option would be to let a professional take care of your website design and development, and you spend your time and money on parts of your business that will most benefit from your input.

If you're not affraid of cms and willing to manage your own hosting and so on, I would say it's always less expensive to go DIY. You do have to factor in your learning curve, and would your time be best spent on your core business rather than fiddling around with CSS and trying to edit XHTML, php code etc. Thanks.
